Madaba is historically one of the oldest cities in the Middle East. It was part of the lands that Moses allotted to the Rabbites and the Gadites (see Joshua 13 p. 9). This was the land of Moab, where Ruth came with Naomi and it was here that she met her second husband. It later became known as the Christian city of Madaba, and has many churches, most of them destroyed but you can still see some exceptional mosaics from the 7th and 8th centuries. This was the "golden age" of Madaba when it was an important city and seat of the Archbishop.
